During his studies in Paris Josef von Brandt met the polish horsepainter Julius Kossak. Kossak introduced Brandt into the art of painting and 1862 he was accepted as a pupil of Franz Adam and Karl Theodor von Piloty at the Munich Akademy. He was awarded mit a Gold Medall of the Muenchner Ausstellung in the year 1869. During the sommer months he was frequently traveling through Turkey and the Ukraine studying the wild mounted combat of their inhabitants. Brandt was awarded the title professor as a member of the Munich Akademy in the year 1878. At Munich a circle of polish painters establisht itself around professor von Brandt among others containing the painters Alfred von Wierusz-Kowalski and Ladislau von Czachórski.
